It’s the new reality in the US: You can’t have it all.
You have to be a dude.
It’s the next big frontier for dentists, who are increasingly finding themselves with to-do lists, to-dos and more.
In an age of technology, online communities and social media, dentists are struggling to keep up with the demands of their patients, said Dr. William H. Fisch, a professor of medicine at Duke University who studies dentistry.
And the growing popularity of digital health and wellness apps has made it even harder to keep track of who is on what and when.
As a dentist you’re trying to do it every day, and that’s a lot of work.
If you don’t do it, you’re going to be doing it forever, Fisch said.
But the more patients and dentists find out, the more the profession is changing.
“It’s going to take a lot more than the fact that I’m a dude,” Fisch told NPR.
“You’re going get a lot closer to the guy.”
That’s exactly what happened in a New York City dental office.
In the past year, Dr. Michael A. Tass, who teaches a course called Dental Care at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health, has seen dentists change their social media accounts, and even the way they interact with patients.
He also says dentists have a lot to learn.
The rise of apps like Fitocracy, FitDentist, Dentist, and others, Fich said, “shows a real shift in the way people are interacting with their dentists.”
Fisch is not the only one.
Dentists across the country have been experimenting with their social and offline presence to better meet patients’ needs.
And that’s the key to success, Fisk said.
“What’s really important to us is to be engaging and to listen to our patients, to be there for them,” he said.
Dentists need to be present to be helpful, said Fisk, but they also need to make sure that the dentist is “not a robot.”
Fisch advises dentists to “stay out of their own personal spaces, and not be like, ‘Oh, I can’t see what you’re doing.'”
“I’m not saying that I want my dentist to be like that, but there’s a way to do that, and it’s really easy,” he added.
“There are other ways to get that kind of engagement, but that’s really the most important thing.”
Dr. Tasheen Fisch is a dental assistant at the Bronx-based St. Mary’s-Brooklyn Medical Center in New York.
(Alex Brandon/NPR)One way to find your dentist is through Fitocracy.
Fitocracy is a health app designed to give dentists an inside look at their patients.
It helps you track your dental practice, check on your practice and provide personalized recommendations for your patients.
FitDentalist, for instance, helps dentists rate their patients and make recommendations for improvements.
“We’re seeing a real change in the dental profession,” said Drs.
T.J. Fisk and David J. Tannenbaum, chair and co-CEOs of the American Dental Association.
“It’s a trend we’re seeing in the health care profession.
The more you’re able to do a face-to-face interaction, the better.”
In many ways, the apps are already working.
Fitdentist’s popularity is increasing in a way that will only continue, Fiss said.
“I think this will continue to get more people engaged, because there’s so much more that can be done in the app,” he continued.
“One of the things that FitDenture, Fitdentalist and FitDontrader do is help dentists make better dentures and to be more helpful,” Tass said.
Fiss added that the apps also can help dentures to be less expensive, and also help dentistry keep a closer eye on its practice.
But some dentists aren’t convinced.
They worry that by using apps like those, dentistry is losing the ability to communicate with patients in a meaningful way.
“When I’m on the phone, I’m not actually listening to my patient,” Fisk told NPR’s Rachel Martin.
“But when I’m in the office, I am listening to the dentist and being a part of their experience.
That is the most meaningful part of my profession.””
We need to do better than that,” Fisch added.
Fisch says dentistry needs to make an effort to reach out to patients and provide a better experience.
“What we are doing is not enough,” he says.
“We have to take this to the next level.”
“The way to really make dentistry more effective is to really listen to your patients, listen to their needs, and make sure they feel
